The following are the games I’ve created (and modules for them). I became interested in creating roleplaying games back in the late 2000s which I found myself increasingly trying to houserule D&D 3e into something that I found fun. By this time I’d played “new” World of Darkness (the 2004 edition) and Hero System 5e and was increasingly discovering that I strongly disliked the class and level style of gameplay, and so I started trying to understand why that was the case.
This resulted in a game I called VERS (Variable Environment Roleplay System), which I worked on for more than 10 years. During that time I read a ton of other systems, like AGE, Fate, Shadowrun 4e, The One Ring, The Black Hack, Knave, OpenQuest, Mythras, RuneQuest, Alien, Bladerunner, and many others. I shoved so many ideas into VERS that it was an unplayable mess, and I had rewritten it from scratch many times.
Ultimately I ditched it, but I had learned a lot from the exercise. That led me to try several experimental designs, making games more as an exercise to understand how different styles of game worked. That is where Less is More, High Stakes Roleplaying, and YASS all came from. Once I proved to myself that I could actually get something written that was interesting and that pushed the boundaries of what I was comfortable with, I started work on the two games I consider my “big games,” DragonRune and Nothing Will Outrun Death.
